09/03/2008 -
Oklahoma City, OK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Oklahoma City's NBA team will be called
the Thunder.
The franchise formally revealed the nickname and logo at an afternoon press
conference on Wednesday.
"The bold, traditional lettering and shield of our logo have been purposefully
designed with simplicity and dignity to let the power of the word THUNDER be
most clearly presented," said team chairman Clay Bennett.
The team color scheme will be blue, yellow and orange.
The news isn't a complete surprise as a number of other NBA team Web sites had
already been selling tickets for games against the "Thunder."
After last season, the franchise moved from Seattle and left behind the
SuperSonics name in the Emerald City.
Bennett was excited by input from the public, saying he received "received
hundreds of ideas" of nicknames. Bennett announced the team's uniform design
is being finalized and will be revealed in late September as players arrive
for training camp.
The Oklahoma City Thunder opens training camp in late September. Its first
preseason game is Wednesday, October 8 vs. Minnesota in Billings, MT. The
Thunder will take the court on October 29 for its historic regular season
debut in the Ford Center vs. the Milwaukee Bucks.
